Debbie’s Experience

My name is Debbie, I am 24 years old, 5 foot 2 with a nice average figure, a little curvy. I am a brunette and work as a secretary. When I was 21 I was out on my own and my boyfriend and I decided to move in together. As soon as this was going to take place I went to my doctor for birth control. He suggested I use Depo-Provera shots, which I started. I am healthy and active and have no medical problems and it seemed to probably be a good fit for me.

During the first 3 months on Depo I had problems with my periods, they were a mess. I had breakthrough bleeding, my periods seemed like they wouldn’t stop. This was especially a problem in the first 2 months. After I had my second Depo shot at 3 months my periods stopped altogether. I was on Depo about a year and a half altogether and didn’t have periods at all for almost two years. After that time I stopped Depo because I thought I would like to get pregnant. To date I have not been able to get pregnant. I have not been using any birth control and do have sex frequently. My periods have resumed but have been generally irregular to date. The doctor has advised me to just be patient at this time as my current infertility is probably temporary and due to the residual effects of Depo.

It turns out that my boyfriend is a “breast man”, he loves my breasts and fondles and suckles them a lot. We have sex frequently, sometimes every night. During the second round of Depo, about 5 months after I started it my breasts started to produce a little milk, just enough for him to taste and notice. It just seemed to make him more of a “breast man”. My breasts never became tender from the Depo but they did increase in size a little bit. I had never heard about an adult nursing relationship and did nothing special to cause this. He enjoyed suckling out what little bit was there morning and evening while we were still in bed. Gradually the amount of milk increased over the next 6 months without any special effort other than what he was doing. After 6 months there was enough milk in my breasts that I could squirt across the room almost any time if I tried. By this time he was earnestly suckling my breasts morning and evening and getting a significant amount of milk. It seemed to me I was fully lactating and I had never been pregnant. We both really enjoyed our cuddling and suckling and it caused me to want to have a baby more than anything so I went off the Depo to get pregnant and that is where I am now. After I stopped the Depo my breasts gradually dried up as my periods came back. My breasts also decreased in size a little back to what they were before. And that is my experience. I am presently still living with my boyfriend and working at the same job as a secretary.

This experience illustrates the effects that Progesterone only birth control methods can have for some women. Depo-Provera is an extremely long acting progestin that can stay in the system for several years after stopping it with consequent long acting effects.
